If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive. - Eleonora Duse

4/22/06 The female Ruby Throat hummingbird arrived today. I wonder if she will drive the male who arrived earlier this month away. She and young dominated this area last year.

4/20/06 I heard a bluegrass song called:

Acony Bell

The fairest bloom the mountain know
Is not an iris or a wild rose
But the little flower of which i'll tell
Known as the brave acony bell

Just a simple flower so small and plain
With a pearly hue and a little known name
But the yellow birds sing when they see it bloom
For they know that spring is coming soon

Well it makes its home mid the rocks and the rills
Where the snow lies deep on the windy hills
And it tells the world "why should i wait
This ice and snow is gonna melt away"

And so i'll sing that yellow bird's song
For the troubled times will soon be gone

which I googled to find Oconee Bell/Shortia galacifolia, a rare wildflower that grows in Tennesee. They can be purchased from wildflower nurseries.

4 17 06 Iris started blooming today. Interestingly, the first variety to bloom is different from last year.

4/7/2005 Spring is glorious this year on the Western Highland Rim (Enlarge map for clarity) of Tennessee. Dogwoods are beginning to color the garden and woods with layers of white. Here and there are washes of redbud/Cercis canadensis purplish pink and the spring green of the first emerging tree leaves against the deep green of cedars and mountains in the distance. Ephemerals cover the forest floor. I can see large patches of mayapple at the edge of the garden. Farther down toward the creek , firepinks/Silene virginica grow about a stone outcropping . Violets are sprinkled thoughout the lawn. Rhododendrons and azaleas are budded and ready. We hope to add some native rhododendrons to the garden this year. Several forsythias in bloom enhance the back fencerow. In the front of the house, two mature Kwanzan cherries are in full bloom; and, next door, my neighbor's saucer magnolias have been making a beautiful show for a while now. Both are so magnificent against the blue sky on clear days. A backlit, leafing, burgundy, Japanese maple is in front of the dining room window. Iris planted in the fall are tall and seem ready to bud. Today, rain is establishing the daylilies and clematis/Duchess of Edinburgh brought and just planted from my Mississippi garden. Ah, life is good.

For gardeners who would like a romantic garden or want to restore an old home, Marion Duckworth Smith can help. Her website and books are not only instructional but beautiful as well.

Iris/Beguine

4/18/2004 There's nothing like an Iris Catalog to keep to keep you busy for hours.

4/14/2004 Since I read that Peony Bowl of Beauty can be grown successfully in Southern California heat, I'm going to try it here in Z8a.

Ranunculas

4/12/2004 This is the first time I have tried Ranunculas and I'm glad I did. From such tiny tuberous claws comes such a many-petaled flower. I will add more next season.

Dogwoods lacing the gray forests with mostly white interspersed with pink and spreading their horizontal branches before deep green pines is a beautiful sight to behold on I 40 between Memphis and Nashville around Easter time.
